EDI file types
and standards in detail 

There are four main EDI standards for file exchange:

  • EDIFACT : Electronic Data Interchange For Administration, Commerce and Transport is a set of standards, directories and guidelines for the electronic exchange of structured data, particularly relating to trade in goods or services, between autonomous computer systems.
  • ODETTE : Organisation of data exchanged by teletransmission in Europe
    • V3 : Message not EDIFACT but ISO9735
    • Today: Automotive standard made up of subsets of the EDIFACT standard.
  • VDA: Association of the automotive industry (Verband der Automobilindustrie)
    • IInitially: German non-EDIFACT and non-ISO9735 automotive standard, made up of positional structured messages. Still in use today.
    • Since 2020: Migration to the automotive standard made up of subsets of the EDIFACT standard.
  • X12: A set of standards, directories and guidelines for the electronic exchange of structured American data.

Of course, each standard includes the various stages of an automated data exchange and has their correspondence in standards other than their own:

EDIFACT: DELFOR (mixed, forecast), DELJIT (firm), ORDERS
VDA: 4905 (mixed, forecast), 4915 (firm)
ANSI: 830 (forecast), 862 (firm)
